ATV Riding Tips for Safe Trail Navigation

Once ATV riding season has arrived, it can be tough to remain safe on the trailways. That's why it is important to learn more about proper safety tips. Whether you are someone who is just getting started or you are a more experienced rider, there is nothing wrong with brushing up on the most important tips and pointers.

Riding safety is of the utmost importance and proactive research is the best way to go. That's why we have prepared this helpful guide that will allow you to remain safe and sound while ATV riding this season:

1. Protective Gear Is Key

There is nothing wrong with grabbing as much protective gear as possible. Those who do not take the time to do so are placing themselves at risk in an unnecessary manner. Gloves, helmets, boots, and goggles are all available. All of this protective gear should be worn during each trip as well. Otherwise, the rider is risking serious injury. ATVs are far more prone to flipping over than most riders realize. Any vehicle that does not come with a seat belt is prone to such issues.

2. Don't Ride Without an Inspection

Inspections must be performed each and every time. Before you hop onto your ATV, be sure to take a closer look. Is there anything that you need to be worried about? Look at the rims and tires, to make sure that there are no damages. The controls must also be examined to make sure that every cable has remained intact. The chain could have links that are worn down, too. Sprockets may contain broken teeth that need to be addressed.

3. Bring a Buddy

There are certain activities where it is better to bring a friend along. ATV riding is certainly one of them. Accidents can and will happen. It pays to have a friend along for the ride. They are able to obtain assistance when a rider finds themselves in serious peril. A riding buddy can also provide assistance when a fellow rider runs out of gas or gets lost. Best of all, riding with friends is simply more fun.

4. Don't Drink or Use Drugs

This one should be obvious and go without saying but unfortunately, there are a number of ATV riders who ignore these simple tips. Don't use any substances that will impair your judgment or reaction time when you are out on the trails. Those who use drugs and alcohol are also placing other riders at risk. There will be plenty of time to crack open a beer once the ATV has been stowed away for the day.

5. Take Breaks When Needed

ATV riding is not something where you can "push through" the tiredness. Once you start to feel yourself becoming fatigued, it is time to stop for the day. Or, you may feel more comfortable with the idea of taking a short break. The process of riding an ATV is actually more physically demanding than the average person expects. Hydrate often and take the time to bring something to eat.

6. Don't Double Up

Don't make the mistake of overloading the ATV with too many riders. These vehicles are designed for one person usage. It is not funny or cute to have multiple riders on one ATV. There is no reason to engage in any sort of piggybacking or anything along these lines.

7. Don't Go Off-Road

It may seem tempting to go off the beaten path a bit. This is not an impulse that needs to be followed, though. If the ATV is being ridden in any location that is not designated for riding, this is a bad sign. Don't make this all too common mistake. Not only is this the best possible choice for your own safety but it is also the best choice that you can make when it comes to the long term health of the ATV. Riding on undesignated trails is horrible when it comes to the wear and tear that is placed on the vehicle itself.

8. Remain Aware

Lots of riders like to throw on headphones and have fun while they are riding. This is an obvious hindrance, though. Don't engage in any activities that are designed to impair awareness. Pay close attention to where riding partners are located as well. Bumps are also going to come up when you least expect them. That's why it is important to pay close attention to the trail at all times. Beware of the many small animals that can dart out from nowhere while you are riding, too.

By taking the time to follow these tips, you can avoid many of the common pitfalls that take place during ATV riding excursions. While these vehicles can be a lot of fun, there is a certain level of respect that must take place. All it takes is a little bit of advanced planning and the proper level of attention to detail to remain safe at all times.
